MLB-SCHEDULE

Rays can catch Yanks...Reds, Giants tip off NL slate

UNDATED (AP) — The two teams fighting it out at the top of the American League East standings will play game two of their three-game weekend series tonight in St. Petersburg. Tampa Bay pulled within a game of New York with last night's 3-2 win over the division leaders. The Rays will be hunting an eighth straight W when they take the diamond at Tropicana Field for tonight's outing against the Yankees.

Rays right-hander Matt Garza gets the ball for the first time since no-hitting the Detroit Tigers.

AL play gets under way this afternoon in Toronto with a game between the Blue Jays and Cleveland Indians (1:07 p.m.).

And there's a late-afternoon start in Boston, where the Red Sox will be trying to get back on track after having their three-game winning streak snapped by the Tigers in last night's series opener. It was Detroit's first win in five games. (4:10 p.m. Eastern)

This evening in the junior circuit, the Central-leading Chicago White Sox host Oakland, Seattle plays at Minnesota, Kansas City is home to Baltimore and the L.A. Angels host West-leading Texas.

National League play doesn't get under way until later today in Cincinnati and San Francisco (4:10 p.m. Eastern).

The Reds enter their contest against East leader Atlanta a half-game behind St. Louis in the NL Central race. The Braves are 3 1-2 games ahead of second-place Philadelphia in their division race.

The Giants start play against the rival L.A. Dodgers in second place in the West, 2 1-2 games behind San Diego.

Tonight in the NL, the Phillies will be looking to avenge last night's loss that snapped an eight-game winning streak when they again take on the Nationals in Washington, the Padres host Florida, the Cardinals are home to Pittsburgh, Milwaukee is at Houston, the New York Mets host Arizona, and the Chicago Cubs are at Colorado.

MLB-INDIANS-WOOD

Indians activate Kerry Wood from disabled list

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Indians have activated Kerry Wood from the disabled list.

The Indians announced today that Wood will take the place of Austin Kearns, who was traded to the New York Yankees yesterday.

Wood was placed on the disabled list earlier this month for a blister on his right index finger. It was his second time on the DL this year. He didn't pitch until May 8 because of a strained muscle in his upper back.

It's possible that Wood could be dealt to a contender before tonight's midnight trading deadline.

NFL-HAYNESWORTH

Haynesworth skips fitness test, watches practice

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — Albert Haynesworth is at practice for the Washington Redskins — but strictly as an observer.

Haynesworth did not take a conditioning test today that coach Mike Shanahan says the two-time All-Pro defensive lineman must pass before practicing. He failed the test Thursday and again yesterday. It is not clear why he didn't retake it today.

While the team practiced in pads and helmets, Haynesworth stood to the side in his No. 92 jersey and a baseball cap. An assistant coach stood next to him, gesturing toward the players working out.

Haynesworth is the only Redskins player required to take the test because he missed the team's entire offseason conditioning program.

LPGA-WOMEN'S BRITISH OPEN

Tseng in the lead, but Pressel closes in

SOUTHPORT, England (AP) — Morgan Pressel has shot a course record 7-under 65 at Royal Birkdale to get back up among the leaders at the British Women's Open.

After dropping shots at the first two holes Saturday, the American had eight birdies and an eagle while dropping just one more stroke to move from four over overnight to three under.

Pressel said her performance put her "right back in the tournament."

Pressel is five shots behind overnight leader Yani Tseng (YAH'-nee sehng) of Taiwan, who starts her third round later today.

USGA-U.S. SENIOR OPEN

Late start in Washington

SAMMAMISH, Wash. (AP) — Bernhard Langer leads the U.S. Senior Open heading into the third round in Washington State. Langer shot a 2-under 68 yesterday for a 3-under total, putting him two strokes ahead of Tommy Armour III, John Cook and J.R. Roth.

PGA-GREENBRIER CLASSIC

Overton on top at midway point

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. (AP) — The field is chasing Jeff Overton in the third round of the PGA's Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia. Overton fired an 8-under-par 62 and is minus-14 going into today's action, four shots ahead of Boo Weekley.
