PALMDALE, Calif. (AP) — A wildfire in the high desert north of Los Angeles had been threatening hundreds of homes and power lines. But after battling the flames through the night, fire crews have the blaze more than 60 percent contained. Los Angeles County Fire Captain Sam Padilla says it's no longer threatening any structures.

NOWSHERA, Pakistan (AP) — The trouble in northwest Pakistan this week has been monsoon rains. A government official says more than 800 people have been killed in flooding caused by record-breaking rainfalls. Some evacuees have begun showing signs of fever, diarrhea and other waterborne diseases.

WASHINGTON (AP) — With Rep. Charlie Rangel already facing an ethics trial in the House this fall, another prominent member of the Congressional Black Caucus could be facing something similar. People familiar with the investigation tell The Associated Press that allegations against Rep. Maxine Waters could be announced next week. The California Democrat has been under investigation for a possible conflict of interest involving a bank that was seeking federal aid.

RHINEBECK, N.Y. (AP) — With roads closed, security all over the place and celebrity watchers crowding their small village, some residents of Rhinebeck, N.Y., have found notes of apology on their door steps, along with a bottle of wine. It comes from Chelsea Clinton's wedding planner. The publicity-shy daughter of the former president and current secretary of state is expected to marry her boyfriend, investment banker Marc Mezvinsky (mez-VIN'-skee), at a nearby estate this evening.

BOSCAWEN, N.H. (AP) — Police in the New Hampshire town of Boscawen (BAHS'-kwyn) are using Facebook as a crime deterrent. They're posting mug shots of people who've been arrested. At least one man has complained that the unwanted publicity cost him a job. But the town's police chief isn't apologizing. He says all arrest records, including mug shots, are public.
