PALMDALE, Calif. (AP) — Crews working through the night have made some major progress against a wildfire north of Los Angeles. Fire officials say the blaze is more than 60 percent contained, and no structures are being threatened. Two days ago, more than 2,000 homes were in danger. The wildfire has burned nearly 22 square miles of brush and destroyed a house and three mobile homes.

NOWSHERA, Pakistan (AP) — Pakistan's army has deployed more than 30,000 troops to help with rescue and relief work, as the country struggles to reach thousands marooned by flooding. One government official in northwest Pakistan says more than 800 people have died and many more are missing. The army says the "devastation is so widespread" that there may be much that's gone unreported.

HONOLULU (AP) — The U.S. Navy commander overseeing military drills in the Pacific says the focus of the exercises is combating terrorism, not sending a message to North Korea. Vice Adm. Richard Hunt says the 14-nation Rim of the Pacific military exercises have been planned for two years and are not a reaction to North Korean accusations that the U.S. and South Korea are plotting to attack.

RHINEBECK, N.Y. (AP) — Celebrity watchers are staked out in Rhinebeck, N.Y., hoping for glimpses of a famous bride, her famous parents or some famous guests. Chelsea Clinton is getting married this evening at a century-old Hudson River estate. Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey are among those rumored to be on the guest list.

SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. (AP) — Some find the cast members of MTV's reality show "Jersey Shore" to be annoying. But yesterday afternoon, beachgoers in Seaside Heights, N.J., went to the police about it. Police Chief Thomas Boyd says cast member Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct after people complained she was bothering them.
