NEW YORK (AP) — Yesterday's flat finish for stocks capped a good month on Wall Street. The Dow fell 1 point yesterday to 10,466. The S&P was ahead slightly, while the Nasdaq gained 3 points. The gain of 7 percent for the Dow was the best month in a year.

WASHINGTON (AP) — In the coming week, the Labor Department releases the monthly unemployment report. Economists expect it to show the nation's jobless rate rose to 9.6 percent in July.

DETROIT (AP) — General Motors cites strong interest in the electric car in announcing that it is boosting production capacity for the new Chevrolet Volt. It will be able to produce 45,000 vehicles in 2012, up from previous plans for 30,000 vehicles. Dealers began taking orders this week for the 2011 model.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The number of banks to fail this year has risen to 108. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. yesterday took over banks in Florida, Georgia, Oregon and Washington. By this time last year, regulators had closed 69 banks.

UNDATED (AP) —Benchmark crude began the month just shy of $73 a barrel. The price for September delivery gained 59 cents Friday to settle at $78.95 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
