PALMDALE, Calif. (AP) — A Los Angeles fire captain says crews are "getting a handle" on a wildfire that has burned 22 square miles of brush and once threatened more than 2,000 homes and buildings. Officials say the fire is now 62 percent contained and no structures are currently threatened. Crews hope to close the fire's south flank before temperatures rise and dry winds whip up again later today.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Food and Drug Administration has approved the vaccines that drug companies will start producing for the upcoming flu season. This year's vaccine is meant to protect against three strains, including swine flu. NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Some fishermen think there's more spilled oil lurking in the Gulf than BP and the federal government are letting on. One local Louisiana official took a group of reporters on a boat tour today and pointed out thick globs. About 70 percent of Louisiana waters are now open to commercial fishing, but one boat captain says he expects to pull up oil-covered shrimp. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Scientists don't know if it's a blip or a trend, but the waters of the Great Lakes are warmer than usual this year. All five lakes have been at or near record highs, and it's still a month before their typical peaks. Swimmers might like it, but it could be bad news for fishing, wildlife habitat and water levels. PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A rare yellow lobster has been pulled from Rhode Island's Narragansett (na-ruh-GAN'-set) Bay. Experts say the genetic feature occurs in about 1 out of 30 million lobsters. It's also apparently good luck for this lobster, which will not be heading to anyone's dinner table.
