Posted: 7/31/2010

NEW YORK (AP) — A person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press that the World Series champion Yankees are closing in on a deal to obtain pitcher Kerry Wood from Cleveland. Earlier today, a day after acquiring Austin Kearns from the Indians, the Bombers completed a trade with Houston for Lance Berkman.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Cubs finally traded Ted Lilly, shipping the left-hander to the L.A. Dodgers along with infielder Ryan Theriot (TEHR'-ee-oh) for infielder Blake DeWitt and a pair of minor league right-handers. Lilly is 3-8 with a 3.69 ERA, Theriot is batting .284 with one homer and 21 RBIs and DeWitt is hitting .270 with 15 doubles, one homer and 30 RBIs.

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Lions opened training camp without first-round pick Ndamukong Suh (ehn-DAHM'-uh-kehn soo) and the team is working feverishly to get the former Nebraska defensive end under contract. Now that the St. Louis Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers have agreed to terms with their draft choices, Suh is the only unsigned player picked in the top three of this year's draft.

NAPA, Calif. (AP) — A concussion suffered when he got kneed in the head during Friday's practice prevented Oakland wide receiver Louis Murphy from participating in today's training camp practice. Coach Tom Cable says the second-year player will not return until he passes a series of tests that shows he has recovered. Murphy led all Raiders wideouts with 34 catches for 521 yards and four touchdowns last season.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Restricted free agent forward Devin Setoguchi (seht-oh-GOO'-chee) has re-signed with San Jose for the 2010-11 NHL season. The 23-year-old tied for fourth on the Sharks with 20 goals last season and accumulated 36 points in 70 games while playing mostly on the second line.
